First birthday cake ideas
- 1-year-olds only! Set aside a special cupcake or small cake specifically for the birthday kid to smoosh. (Cameras ready! 📸)
- Classic character cake. Make or order a cake featuring a character beloved by very young children. Elmo, Mickey, Snoopy, Winnie the Pooh and Curious George are just a few possibilities.
- #1-shaped cake. There are lots of online tutorials for how to cut a sheet cake into a #1 or assemble a #1 shape using cupcakes. 🧁
- Simple icons. 🌻 Opt for a bold and simple cake shape—heart, sun, rainbow, flower, star, smiley face, mushroom, animal face, ladybug, ball, etc.
First birthday food ideas
- Fruit salad or other fresh fruit 🍌 Especially any berries or other fruits that the one-year-old loves. But maybe avoid grapes—they can be a choking hazard for very young children who are still working on their chewing skills.
- Crackers and cheese 🧀 Include some toddler-friendly cracker varieties that break down easily, such as Ritz.
- Toddler snack mix 👶🏻 Make your own mix that features cereal bits, freeze-dried berries and other toddler-safe foods.
- Whatever the adults at the party will enjoy 🍕 Especially if you’re serving a meal, it’s OK to gear it toward the older people at the party. One-year-old cuisine is limited—and they’re usually more interested in playing than eating.
Whatever shape your 1st birthday celebration takes, be sure to schedule it at a time when the birthday kid is likely to be at their best and happiest (i.e., NOT in the middle of naptime).
