50th birthday party decor and theme ideas
- Go all in on the ’80s 🕺 We’re talking neon colors, off-the-shoulder sweatshirts, big hair, ’80s snacks and sodas, and of course, THE MUSIC. How totally gnarly is that??
- Grunge it up 🥾If the ’90s were more your thing, no problem. Break out the plaid flannel shirts and the combat boots and crank up some grunge anthems.
- Do a Top 10 music countdown 🎵 Harken back to the music countdowns of the ’80s and ’90s and create a playlist of the top songs from when the birthday person was a crucial age, like 13, 18 or 21. Or create a personalized countdown that spans all of their favorites.
- Throw a surprise high school or college reunion party 🎉 Invite far-flung friends and surprise the birthday person with all the trappings of that era of their life—the music, the food, the games, you name it.

50th birthday cake ideas
- The nostalgia factor. Zero in on a favorite nostalgic band or teenage heartthrob and put it on a cake.
- Make it totally rad. Channel the ’80s and decorate your cake with slang (gnarly, rad, tubular) or nostalgic icons (a VHS tape, a corded phone, roller skates).
- Animal shapes. Track down a vintage-style cake pan and make a cake in the shape of an animal, like those retro cakes from the ’70s and ’80s.
- Go all out. Get fancy and order a custom layer cake decorated with the birthday person’s favorite colors and flowers.

- International theme 🌎 Transport yourself with food from your/their favorite country visited so far. Ask each guest to bring a dish that represents that country’s cuisine.

50th birthday gift ideas
- Photo slideshow. Create a customized, old-school slideshow with personalized photos. This could also take the form of an old-school viewer and a custom stereoscope.
- Faves from the ’80s. Go all in on ’80s fashion accessories: bangle bracelets, jelly shoes and those plastic chains with the big plastic charms.
- Track down some nostalgic items you know they were into back in the day—like figurines, trading cards, stuffies or comic books.
- Mixtape madness. Make a good old-fashioned mixtape with songs that remind you of the birthday person.
