Why Peanuts still feels like Christmas, and how to bring a little Snoopy spirit into your holiday celebrations

Top left shows Charlie Brown in a Santa hat framed by a Christmas wreath; top right shows Schroeder playing a red piano beside a decorated Christmas tree; bottom left shows Sally sitting with a red drink topped with whipped cream and a candy cane; bottom right shows Snoopy and Woodstock in winter hats and scarves riding on a pink sled against a snowy blue background.

When it comes to holiday nostalgia and Christmas comfort traditions, it’s hard to top A Charlie Brown Christmas. At the opening of this beloved 1965 Christmas special, a pretty snow is falling and friends are having fun ice-skating. But somehow Charlie Brown can’t quite catch the Christmas spirit that seems to come naturally to everyone else. Something is missing for him.

Peanuts Christmas lovers like me can absolutely relate to that “something’s missing” feeling. If it’s December and we haven’t watched A Charlie Brown Christmas yet, then something is most definitely missing. Luckily, in our case, our Christmas-spirit problem has an easy solve: we gather with loved ones and settle in for our first A Charlie Brown Christmas viewing of the season. (In my family, it’s sure to be only the first of many.) There’s just something so instantly relatable—and lovable—about this classic story. No wonder so many of us make it part of our holiday traditions.

What makes A Charlie Brown Christmas such a classic?

There are probably as many different reasons as there are Peanuts fans. For starters, I’ll share why I still consider it essential holiday viewing, even as an older mom with grown kids: I love how A Charlie Brown Christmas distills something essential about the holidays.

In less time than it takes to wrap a batch of gifts, I get to see Linus, Lucy and friends connecting with intention, making time for togetherness and teaming up to make holiday memories happen. Those are things I want more of in my Christmas.

If that sounds like you, too, then you’re in the right place. Peanuts can be a great inspiration source for creating meaningful holiday moments of your own. Keep reading for more reasons why people love A Charlie Brown Christmas, plus ideas for how to bring those qualities to life in your own Christmas season.

Ten more reasons why people love A Charlie Brown Christmas

In addition to its meaningful story themes, the special connects to some important themes on multiple levels. Here are just a handful of reasons why its appeal is so enduring and universal.

1. All-Ages Appeal

Viewers across generations can find something to appreciate and smile about in A Charlie Brown Christmas. That makes it ideal for sharing between kids, parents and grandparents. In my family, this is one holiday watch we can all agree on.

How to channel this into your Christmas: Lean into the fact that all ages know and love the Peanuts characters and their holiday story. Peanuts ornaments, décor or serving items can provide an instant conversation starter for kids, teens and older family members who might not see each other that often.

2. Relaxed pace

A lot happens in the 25 minutes of A Charlie Brown Christmas, and yet the pace of the storytelling is notably laid-back and leisurely. This makes the experience of watching it a little oasis of calm in the middle of an otherwise full-speed-ahead season.

How to bring this to your holidays: Watch A Charlie Brown Christmas whenever you and your family could use a reset. It’s short enough that you can use it to fill in-between moments. It’s also familiar and soothing for when you need to calm overstimulated kids. Reading together is a great way to slow down, too. Consider sharing a Peanuts Christmas book as a read-aloud or even creating a cozy reading nook complete with some Snoopy bookends, a Peanuts blanket and a soft Snoopy plush to snuggle.

3. Comfort and nostalgia

For many of us, the vintage charm of Peanuts goes hand in hand with the holidays. Peanuts is our idea of what Christmas should look and feel like. For everyone from boomers to Gen Alpha, Peanuts reads as Christmas comfort, and it’s part of some of our warmest, coziest memories.

How to add some Peanuts comfort to your Christmas: Incorporate nostalgic decorations that evoke Peanuts’ mid-20th-century and comic-strip origins. Handmade items like paper snowflakes, popcorn strings and homemade ornaments can add to the retro coziness, too.

Peanuts holiday merchandise collage featuring a Snoopy nutcracker-style figurine holding a candy cane and gifts, a blue fleece blanket with Peanuts characters and partially readable text, a green mug that reads “DECK THE HALLS” with Snoopy and Charlie Brown illustrations, and a Peanuts Christmas train decoration with multiple festive train cars carrying character figures, a snowman, a Christmas tree, and holiday gifts.

4. Authenticity and imperfection

These qualities come through in every detail of A Charlie Brown Christmas, from Charlie Brown’s real, honest feelings of discouragement to the unpolished sound of the ordinary kids who voiced the characters for the special. The genuineness shines right through.

How to bring this spirit to your celebrations: Let your messy moments be. Remind yourself that not every part of your season needs to be worthy of a Christmas card photo or social media post. Picture the Peanuts gang having a blast dancing at Christmas play rehearsal instead of actually rehearsing. When possible, resist the urge to stage-direct moments like these. Instead, let them unfold in all their imperfect glory.

5. Snoopy!

Especially for the youngest fans, loving Peanuts is probably as simple as finding Snoopy adorable and funny. Nothing wrong with that. Christmas is about sharing joy after all. And his doghouse decorating is pretty awesome. He also looks great in a puffer jacket.

How to “Snoopy up” your season: You could do an entire Snoopy-themed tree for a child’s room or other smaller space. And in general, you can embrace Snoopy’s playfulness, flexibility and can-do spirit. (After all, who else could be every animal in the Christmas play?)

6. Winter wonder

Charlie Brown and friends spend a lot of time outside—ice-skating, walking, catching snowflakes on their tongues. These scenes are both enchanting and peaceful.

How to bring more wonderland to your holidays: Whether you get a white Christmas or not, make time to experience a little December nature yourself. Take a walk on a trail or just around your neighborhood to look at Christmas lights. Bundle up in some Peanuts cold-weather gear for even more fun.

7. The music

The special’s sophisticated Vince Guaraldi jazz piano soundtrack is a surprising choice for a show ostensibly aimed at kids. It’s aged-up, elegant and a key part of the show’s cozy, calming vibe. Now it’s impossible to imagine A Charlie Brown Christmas—or Christmas itself—without it.

How to let Peanuts soundtrack your season: Play the A Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack while decorating, writing Christmas cards, wrapping gifts—or whenever you need a surefire way to get in the holiday spirit.

Peanuts holiday-themed gift collage featuring a Snoopy ornament wearing earmuffs and a puffy winter coat while holding a mug, two glass candle holders with the visible text “MERRY” and partially visible “MERRY MA,” a plush Snoopy toy in patterned green fabric, a colorful Peanuts holiday throw blanket, a Snoopy house-shaped decoration, and four small round holiday plates labeled “SILLY,” “MERRY,” “JOLLY,” and “CHILLY.” The products are arranged in a six-panel grid against festive patterned backgrounds.

8. Emotional simplicity

Sure, A Charlie Brown Christmas includes deeply meaningful themes. But the delivery is straightforward and easy to understand. That helps it to remain evergreen. It also provides a refreshing contrast with our chaotic holiday schedules and complicated 21st-century reality.

How to center Peanuts-style simplicity in your holidays: A Charlie Brown Christmas is at its simplest when shepherd Linus steps into the spotlight to recite the story of the very first Christmas. Everything else falls away in this moment. You can make this simple scene a touchstone your family returns to throughout the season with ornaments and décor.

9. Connection and togetherness

When Charlie Brown seeks advice from “Doctor” Lucy, she nudges him to get involved by directing the Christmas play. This helps him get out of his own head and into proximity with caring friends. It’s solid advice, and it’s as relevant as ever.

How to bring more togetherness to your Christmas: Host an impromptu coffee and hot cocoa get-together. Say yes to invitations when you can. Reenvision traditionally solo activities like baking, decorating, wrapping or volunteering as family or team activities.

10. Charlie Brown

He’s the kind of underdog we all love to cheer for—and so is the spindly tree he chooses for the Christmas play.

How to add some “Good Ol’ Charlie Brown” spirit to your season: Charlie Brown asks big questions, seeks help when he needs it and strives to find real meaning in the season. Those are great qualities to emulate and talk about as a family. If Charlie Brown is a favorite for you or a Peanuts fan you love, you could also highlight him on your tree or tabletop.

One ornament shows Snoopy wearing earmuffs with a small bird on top, and the other features Snoopy beside a decorated tree with the visible text “2026” and “CHRISTMAS IS BRIGHTER WITH FRIENDS.”
