Why fall always feels like a fresh start

One of my favorite childhood rituals happened before the school year even began. Long before the first day of school, I would spend the summer collecting everything I needed for the new school year. New clothes. New notebooks. Fresh folders. Pens that actually worked. (Remember the cream-colored gel pens? Those were my favorite!)

Because I took my job as an aspiring fashionista very seriously, I’d plan my outfits for the first two weeks of school in advance, making sure each one coordinated perfectly with my backpack and school supplies. I did this every year from middle school through my senior year of high school. Looking back, it was probably a lot of effort for someone who wasn’t even driving yet. But for me, it wasn’t really about the clothes or the school supplies.

It was about possibility…the fresh start.

I always felt like there was something magical about the feeling of a new school year. New teachers, new classes and new opportunities. A chance to become an even better version of yourself than you were the year before. That’s probably why fall has remained my favorite season, all these years later. Sure, it helps that my birthday arrives around Labor Day, giving me another reason to celebrate. But my love for fall was always rooted much deeper than birthday celebrations.

Even though I’m no longer shopping for binders and backpacks, I still find myself drawn to the energy that arrives with the back-to-school season. While many people wait until January to reset their goals, I always find myself doing it in the fall. There’s something about watching the seasons change that reminds me I can change, too.

As a Virgo, I naturally love fresh starts.

I love organization, planning and creating systems that help me move forward. Fall feels like permission to lean into all of that. It gives me a burst of motivation to finish the year strong before the slower rhythm of Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas begins. It’s almost as if fall becomes my personal reset button.

Every September, I spend time reflecting on how much life has changed…not just over the last twelve months, but over several years. I allow myself time for thinking things like: “This time two years ago, I was desperately trying to find stability. Today, I’m more grounded than I’ve ever been.” These reflective moments remind me that growth is often easier to recognize when we pause long enough to look back.

I’ve also created little traditions that help me embrace the season. I decorate my home for autumn. I prepare my holiday budget so I can enjoy the months ahead with less financial stress. I begin sketching out goals for the coming year while giving myself permission to work hard now so I can truly rest during the holidays.

Over the years, I’ve realized one of the biggest misconceptions we have about personal growth is the belief that we have to wait for January to begin again. We convince ourselves we’ll start next month, next year or after life slows down. I used to be guilty of this way of thinking, but I’ve learned that fresh starts don’t belong to the calendar. They belong to us.

God designed the world around us in seasons, and I don’t think that’s by accident. Every season carries its own invitation. Spring reminds us to bloom. Summer encourages us to gather. Winter calls us to rest. And, for me, fall has always whispered this:

Begin again. Start fresh.

Not because I’ve previously failed or fallen behind, but because every season offers another opportunity to become more of who God created me to be.

As the leaves begin to change this year, I hope you’ll give yourself permission to embrace your own fresh start. Maybe it’s beginning a habit you’ve been putting off. Maybe it’s repairing a relationship. Whatever it looks like, remember this: You don’t need a new month, a new year or even a special occasion to begin again.

What can you start doing today, regardless of the timing, to give yourself the fresh start you desire?
