First birthday party decor and theme ideas
- The ABCs of (Ellie)
Have a letters-of-the-alphabet cake or cookies, balloon letters spelling the one-year-old’s name, letter labels or signs, such as “P” is for Pictures for a photo-backdrop spot.
- Young MacDonald
Decorate with plush farm animals and farm-themed picture books the one-year-old can keep. Make a banner or garland featuring farm animal sounds.
- (Liam’s) 1st birthday splash!
Celebrate with an under-the-sea vibe. Serve boat- or whale-shaped cake or other treats. Use bath toys as tabletop decor.
- Teddy bear picnic
Feature bear balloons, banners and treats. Stick with easy sandwiches or treats that would belong at an actual picnic. Have a teddy bear photo prop that’s included in photos of the one-year-old with each of the guests.
- Blue skies for (Ava)
Include cute sun, cloud and rainbow icons in decor. Have sun hats or inexpensive sunglasses that the one-year-old and guests can wear for photos.
There’s no need to stick with traditional one-year-old ideas if you’re looking for something unique! Find even more party themes and ideas that could work for your celebration here.
First birthday cake ideas
- 1-year-olds only! Set aside a special cupcake or small cake specifically for the birthday kid to smoosh. (Cameras ready!
)
- Classic character cake. Make or order a cake featuring a character beloved by very young children. Elmo, Mickey, Snoopy, Winnie the Pooh and Curious George are just a few possibilities.
- #1-shaped cake. There are lots of online tutorials for how to cut a sheet cake into a #1 or assemble a #1 shape using cupcakes.
- Simple icons.
Opt for a bold and simple cake shape—heart, sun, rainbow, flower, star, smiley face, mushroom, animal face, ladybug, ball, etc.
First birthday food ideas
- Fruit salad or other fresh fruit
Especially any berries or other fruits that the one-year-old loves. But maybe avoid grapes—they can be a choking hazard for very young children who are still working on their chewing skills.
- Crackers and cheese
Include some toddler-friendly cracker varieties that break down easily, such as Ritz.
- Toddler snack mix
Make your own mix that features cereal bits, freeze-dried berries and other toddler-safe foods.
- Whatever the adults at the party will enjoy
Especially if you’re serving a meal, it’s OK to gear it toward the older people at the party. One-year-old cuisine is limited—and they’re usually more interested in playing than eating.
Whatever shape your 1st birthday celebration takes, be sure to schedule it at a time when the birthday kid is likely to be at their best and happiest (i.e., NOT in the middle of naptime).
