18th birthday party theme and decor ideas
- Favorites 😍 It’s a no-brainer to consider the favorites of the birthday person! Favorite colors, patterns, celebrities, artists, authors, snacks, etc., are all great foundations for a party theme.
- Superlatives 🏆 The funniest. The most adventurous. The most likely to end up famous. The yearbook never gets senior superlatives perfectly right, so why not make your own? A superlative party can have hyper-specific (but also good-natured) categories to match partygoers, involve costumes and maybe even include booklets as party favors.
- Dearest gentle debutante 👗 Turning 18 can feel like making your debut to the ton! Bridgerton fans can have the costume party of their dreams to celebrate the milestone, or they can keep it more low-key with cute cozy Bridgerton socks, mugs, blankets and more. If you’re feeling really creative, you could write up your own society papers inspired by Lady Whistledown.
- Coming-of-age classic 💫 There is also so much great coming-of-age content that focuses more on personal growth and development (though a lot of it still has some pretty cute romance). Just one example: Gilmore Girls. The themes can focus on Rory graduating, Lorelai owning her own business, and the power of friendship. We have cute mugs, platters and watch-party goodness to help.
- Voting ✅ One of the most important things an 18-year-old can do is vote. You can keep it fun and breezy by voting on silly things (who has the wildest “hear-me-out” opinions, which trendy animal would actually be a good pet, etc.), or you can go a more action-oriented route if the birthday person really cares about an upcoming IRL election (call-your-senators party, letter-writing party, activist-stickering party).
18th birthday cake ideas
- Ballot box cake. Make little ballots with compliments and well-wishes that can be stuck into a lightweight, paper box on top of the cake. All the sweetness can be read before wishes are made and treats are served.
- Tattoo cake. Even if fully getting inked isn’t doable at the birthday party, you can commemorate future tattoo plans (or former tattoo gifts) on the cake! Just sticking fake tattoos into the top of the cake is a totally valid method.
- Butterfly cake. A cake that signifies growth and transformation? Yes, please! Celebrate who the birthday person has become and how much beauty is in their future with a butterfly cake.
18th birthday food ideas
- Taste-testing 🍱 One of the best parts of turning 18 can be the freedom to try new things. Serve any food the birthday person has been curious about (and keep a frozen pizza on hand, just in case).
- Home-cooked comforts 🍪 If turning 18 means leaving home soon, the birthday person might really appreciate a smorgasbord of homestyle favorites.
- Fancy food 🤌 If you really want to lean into the adult thing, you can have fun trying some hors d’oeuvres. A few fancy recipes we have on hand: lemon ricotta bruschetta, fig spread and baked brie phyllo tarts.
18th birthday gift ideas
- Something nostalgic. Anything they’ll miss about being a kid has a perfect place here, and it doesn’t have to relegate the thing to the past. If they still love coloring, a Crayola pencil or marker set will still feel like a nostalgic gift! This would also be the perfect opportunity to frame some original art of yore…
- Something perfect for right now. Sometimes an 18th birthday feels like constantly being tugged back and forth from past to future. The birthday person might appreciate something to help them stay present! A camera and photo album, a gratitude journal and some cute stickers, even just some sparklers to really cherish the moment.
- Something that will come in handy. Let’s be real: Sometimes we just need the practical gifts. Multi-purpose gift cards, cash, value-size packs of toilet paper…all of these things will be appreciated (if not now, then later), and they can be dressed up to feel a little more fun and cute.
18th birthday card message ideas
- Always been a great teen, and now you’re freakin’ 18! WHOO-HOO!
- There’s nothing like a birthday, and there’s definitely nothing like an 18th birthday! Soak it all in and make some amazing memories.
- Growing up is never easy, but here you are. All grown up and wonderful and stuff. Happy 18th birthday!
- In some ways, your life is just beginning. I’m so excited for the future heading your way and can’t wait to see all that you get up to! Happy 18th birthday!
- Turning 18 can be a lot. It feels like everyone has their own idea of what it should be like, but here’s the truth: There’s no one right idea. However 18 looks for you, I hope you take the time to appreciate all you did to get here and take comfort in knowing that you can handle whatever comes your way next.
Now that you’ve done the reading, it’s time to get to the fun stuff! We hope you have a blast making the 18th birthday people in your lives feel seen, loved and celebrated!
