Coloring is one of those rare activities that’s a good idea any time of year—it’s why we offer free coloring pages for just about every season or holiday! But we happen to think it’s especially great on birthdays. You can fit it into pretty much any part of the day, making even the smallest moments feel fun and celebratory. Here are a few ideas:

  • Serve breakfast with a side of crayons. Have a special breakfast planned? Print out these birthday coloring pages and put them down as placemats on the dining table. Wrap up a new box of crayons, colored pencils or markers and set them next to the utensils.
  • Make them part of a scavenger hunt. Hide coloring pages in one place, crayons and a special treat in others. Make the hunt as hard (or easy) as you want. Find more tips and free printables for clues here.
  • Have a coloring picnic! Pack up their favorite snacks, some of these birthday coloring pages, a bunch of crayons and a surface to color on, then head to your favorite park. If the weather’s not cooperating, arrange a floor picnic in the living room instead. Feel free to add a blanket fort!
  • Make it a party activity. Not every kid wants to (or can) play sports or organized games at birthday parties. Provide these birthday coloring pages as an alternative activity for kids who are more reserved, get overwhelmed easily or have mobility issues.

Birthday coloring pages for kids

What are birthdays all about? Cake, ice cream, presents, more cake…yeah, it was pretty easy to decide what these coloring pages would be designed around. Also, we threw in a few more challenging designs for older kids!

Birthday coloring pages for adults

Hey, kids don’t need to have all the fun! Adults also get the urge to color, and we support that 100%. These super-detailed designs are perfect for kids at heart who want to zone out with some soothing hues.

Tips for shading

Want to try your hand at shading? We’ve got pretty great artists here at Hallmark, and they’ve got some awesome advice to take your coloring game to the next level.

  • Simplify. Keep things from getting visually overwhelming by limiting colors to just two or three options.
  • Go monochrome. Pick a few shades of the same color (example: pink, dark pink and light pink).
  • Be complementary. Pick three colors that are next to each other in the rainbow, like green, blue and purple.
  • Under pressure. Use different amounts of pressure to create darker areas, lighter areas and blend different colors.
  • Try pointillism. Use markers to make dots of a darker color (orange) to create shading on a lighter color (yellow). Look at you being all artistic!

What to do with birthday coloring pages when they’re done

Everyone’s done coloring their masterpiece…now what? Here are some ideas for how to make the fun last or brighten someone’s day.

  • Tuck it in to a card. Send a little love to someone who sent you a nice birthday card or gave you a gift by putting a finished coloring page in a thank-you card and sending it to them.
  • Decorate their room. Turn their birthday into a birthweek (or longer!) by decorating their bedroom door or walls with the finished coloring pages.
  • Scrapbook it! Recording every amazing year in an album for them (and maybe you) to look back on when they’re older? Slip their favorite birthday coloring page in with any snapshots and fun quotes you’re putting in there.

Whatever you do with your birthday coloring pages, we hope you have lots of fun making them your own.
