Juneteenth is a day of remembrance that honors how Black people have resiliently transformed their families, communities, freedom and ultimately the country—all despite continued experiences of oppression. The determination to create beauty and find hope, while also making a lasting impact on history and culture, is a big part of what Black communities celebrate when they honor Juneteenth.

Juneteenth marks the historic day when the last enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, received word that they were now free, according to Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. The proclamation itself was issued in 1863 while the Civil War was still happening. But the news of it didn’t arrive until two years later, on June 19, 1865. So June 19th became a day of celebrating freedom that was long overdue!
It’s a day that carries Black pride and love across generations. Because it commemorates the end of slavery, the day is celebrated fully within the cultural tradition of Black joy—where Black people chose joy “irregardless” of hardship. The whole day can feel like the cookout with your favorite cousins where the mac ’n’ cheese is just right, everybody’s doing the Electric Slide and your uncle can’t stop cutting up.
