Brighten a day with words of encouragement
You probably know someone who is feeling down or going through one of life’s rough patches. Lifting his or her spirits doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. A simple note at the right moment—a few kind words or even just a “hello”—might mean the difference between a bad day and a good day.
Don’t know where to begin? Try these simple tips:

- Start with why you’re writing. State the reason as simply as you can. If you’re comfortable writing unpleasant words like “divorce” or “sick,” go ahead and do it. If not, just say you’re thinking of him or her at this “difficult time.”
- Share your feelings. Let the person know you’re sorry about what’s happening or simply that she’s on your mind and you hope everything’s okay.
- Say something nice. Give a compliment or mention something you know will make the person smile. Try to create a warm, uplifting tone.
- Offer your support. Make yourself available (physically and emotionally). You might run errands, cook dinner or just stop by for some one-on-one time. Be specific about how you’d like to help—and be sure you follow through.
- Wrap it up. Remind the person how much you care and that you’re thinking of her. Wish her the best and close the letter.
- Add something extra. Jot down an inspirational quote or send a small gift like a magazine or a scented candle. You can even offer to take her out for a relaxing activity like a massage or manicure.
