Gifts by College Major

If your grad is passionate about their major, then getting them a gift related to it is a great idea! Click on for a pretty thorough list (if we do say so ourselves) of college graduation gifts we recommend based on major.

Agricultural Sciences

Ag grads never stop growing (wordplay!) and thank goodness for that. Read on for some lively gift ideas for the grads who are responsible for so much of what we all need in our day-to-day.

General Agriculture Grad Gifts

  • Outdoor clothes. There’s a lot of outside time for ag grads, and it’s often pretty active. Sturdy but comfortable hiking boots, moisture-wicking underwear and work gloves would all be great options.
  • A farm-cation. Ag grads spent a ton of time working in nature, so they might appreciate the chance to relax in nature for a change. Help finance or plan a remote bed-and-breakfast stay or a leisure-based outdoor activity.
  • The opposite of a farm-cation. Some ag grads might appreciate a vacation that’s a complete change of pace—a big city trip that refreshes them but also reminds them why they love agriculture.

Architecture

Architecture grads are out there building the world we want to see. They are quite literally foundational to our everyday life, from designing our homes and social spaces to preserving important historical landmarks.

General Architecture Grad Gifts

  • A friend in architecture informed me that “no self-respecting architect would buy lined or plain paper.” 🤢 So grid paper and dotted paper notebooks are the ones to go for!
  • Fancy measuring tape. Architects have to measure things A LOT, so reliable measuring tape is a must. Look for a double-sided one that has a good hook and strong spring back. Bonus points if you find a way to customize it (without hindering functionality).
  • Software and digital tools. Architects do a lot of digital designing, so software, tablets, tablet accessoriesstylus and styluses (styli?) will all be greatly appreciated.

Architecture Grad Gifts by Specialty

  • Interior Architecture: Coffee table books of beautiful interiors, mood board supplies
  • Landscape Architecture: High-quality sketchbooks and colored pencils
  • Urban Design: A cool 3D map of the grad’s favorite city
  • Engineering: Top-tier mechanical pencils with good erasers

Aviation

Thank goodness for aviation grads and their sky-eyed spirits. It takes a lot of guts, skill and training to become a pilot, so they definitely deserve some great gifts to celebrate!

  • A good pair of sunglasses. Pilots don’t just wear them to look cool and Top Gun-ish, they’re necessary for flight! Sunblock is recommended, too. Throw this cool paper craft card in to make it feel more on-theme!
  • Pilot tools. Flashlights, headsets, ear plugs and digital tablets are some of the basics that pilots need. The grad likely already has some (if not all) of these from training, so ask them about upgrades and preferences!
  • Airplane trinkets. Model airplanes, airplane ornaments, and even a zip-along airplane plush toy are fun, lighthearted gifts for aviation grads. These can be especially nice since aviation can be a stressful job with long hours, so it’s good to remember that they’re living what so many kids dream about.

Business

A selection of gifts meant for a recent college graduate with a business or finance major, including a custom puzzle; a notepad of tear-off weekly calendar pages with a heading that reads,

Business grads make the working world spin. And there are a LOT of great gift options to choose from for them.

General Business Grad Gifts

  • Formal work clothes. Business employers still value a buttoned-up personal presentation—even in virtual positions—so formal work clothes will help your grad with interviews and networking.
  • Good planners and desk calendars. The business world is full of meetings that can clog up personal calendars. Business grads will appreciate a tangible calendar that can remind them of other important dates.
  • Fidget toys, stress balls and ergonomic desk stuff. Once again, meetings are a way of life for the business grad. Gifts that keep their body moving during meetings will be greatly appreciated.

Business Grad Gifts by Specialty

  • Finance: Software (financial modeling, etc.), spreadsheet merch
  • Marketing: Software (content creation, analytics, etc.), an homage to their favorite ad
  • Accounting: Software (accounting, spreadsheets, tax prep, etc.), an abacus or other cool number nerd tool

  • MBA: Time-management tools and apps, a fancy planner, a nice briefcase or computer bag

Christian

It’s safe to say that Christian grads are dedicated to their faith, which can be difficult during a time with so much growth and change. We recommend celebrating them with the following glorious gifts.

  • A new Bible. Whether it’s a meaningful family heirloom or a new and beautiful edition, your Christian grad will appreciate having another holy book in their collection.
  • A faith-filled picture. The frame itself can have a faith theme, but so can the picture! Include a special place (a nostalgic church, a baptism site), a special person, and/or a special memory.
  • A faith-themed perpetual calendar. If your grad is moving into a place or career that doesn’t have religion as closely entwined as Christian college, they’ll appreciate other ways to help make faith a daily practice.

Communications and Journalism

Communications grads work hard to keep us informed and connected. They deserve some gifts that will make them feel connected, too!

General Communications Grad Gifts

  • A website. Domain names can be expensive, but it really helps comm grads get exposure and keep a portfolio of their work if they have somewhere digital to post their stories—and potentially showcase site-building skills.
  • Apps that help with social media. Social media is another way comm grads get exposure and keep track of their work. If your comm grad hates social media (like me), there are apps that help you post on multiple platforms at once without engaging their algorithms. If your grad enjoys social media, there are apps to help them design standout posts.
  • A new copy of the AP Stylebook. Your grad’s copy likely got beat up thanks to the Professor Robertas of the world (shout-out to both her excellent class and zucchini bread), and it’s always handy to have one.

Communications Grad Gifts by Specialty

  • Broadcast: On-camera clothes (fancy, professional), off-camera clothes (comfortable, professional), something that celebrates their favorite anchor
  • Multimedia: Camera equipment for a pro camera or smartphones, audio equipment like recorders, mini mics, etc., software subscriptions for editing, publishing, etc., nice frame for their first published story
  • Public Relations: Software for media-monitoring or social media management

Computer Science

Computers are pretty much everywhere all the time for us—at school, work, social events and in our pockets. So computer science grads are everywhere, too, and we owe them some good gifts!

  • Tech stuff! This might seem too obvious, but there’s ALWAYS a new computer accessory that would be helpful. Or at least the need to update an old one. There are also lots of fun options for personalizing things like keyboards and mouses.
  • Fun puzzles. Sometimes when you’re dealing with a frustrating problem (which is pretty much all the time in IT), you need a little break to clear your head. And a fun puzzle can help with that. Crossword books, sudoku, a puzzle-app subscription…all are good.
  • Video games and video-game-related stuff. A lot of comp-sci majors started their journeys through loving video games, and there are always awesome new games coming out. If your grad is specifically in programming, they might appreciate software that helps them make games, too!

Education

A selection of gifts meant for a recent college graduate with a teaching degree, including a pair of magnetic plushies in the shape of a pencil and an eraser; a trinket tray in the shape of a pencil that reads

Education grads are out there fighting the good fight. They’re educating, mentoring and caring for kids, all while making it work on a teacher’s salary. Plus funding for schools in most states is not what it needs to be—many teachers pay for what their kids need out of their own pockets!

General Education Grad Gifts

  • Self-care gifts for unwinding. Like bubble bath, face masks, wine and a wine glass or a spa gift card).
  • Small appliances for their classroom. Think things like a laminator, coffeemaker, microwave, etc.
  • School and classroom supplies. You can never go wrong with these and/or gift cards to help cover them. If you’re not into the idea of gifting money, ask your grad for a list of the things they need.

Education Grad Gifts by Specialty

  • Elementary Education: Bulletin board decorating supplies, fun teacher outfits (silly sweaters, big jewelry, etc.)
  • High School Education: A sturdy insulated coffee mug or water bottle, custom nameplate or other desk accessory
  • Special Education: Sensory sensitivity aid supplies, like noise-cancelling headphones and fidget toys
  • Early Childhood Education: A white-noise machine for naptime, a LOT of hand sanitizer 😂

Engineering

A selection of gift ideas for a recent college graduate from an engineering or science major, including a Star Wars pen holder in the shape of a silver Millennium Falcon spaceship; a little plush gift card holder in the shape of a mirrored disco ball; a ceramic mug with a message on the side that reads,

Engineering grads not only had intense schooling with lots of challenging classes, they’re also entering a really competitive job market! There are MANY different types of engineers out there, so here are lots of gift ideas.

General Engineering Grad Gifts

  • Tools, tools, tools! Engineers all need some really specific ones (physical and digital) that we don’t have the expertise to accurately recommend. Ask your grad what equipment and software subscriptions they need—both the need-to-haves and the nice-to-haves.
  • Hobby building sets. It might be nice for your engineer grad to get the gift of remembering why they thought engineering is fun to begin with. Could be brick-builders, model kits, wooden puzzles, puzzle boxes, etc.
  • Networking opportunities. Help fund a trip to an engineering convention or cover the cost of a local or national engineering club membership.

Engineering Grad Gifts by Specialty

  • Chemical Engineering: An old-school chemistry set or recipe book—many chemical engineers can also be talented cooks!
  • Industrial Engineering: Board games and video games that involve optimizing processes and resource management (searching “resource management games” will give you more results than you’d expect)
  • Civil Engineering: Building models and blueprints of their favorite structures
  • Electrical Engineering: A cool antique electronic gadget that needs a little tinkering
  • Mechanical Engineering Grad Gifts: 3D printing supplies, vehicle ornaments
  • Environmental Engineering Grad Gifts: sustainable home goods, subscription to a recycling pick-up service
  • Aerospace Engineering: Model rockets and space prints or posters, anything Star Wars or Star Trek
  • Biomedical Engineering: A personalized lab coat

Humanities

Oh, the humanities! They may be annoying, but they add a lot of art and meaning to our lives. As they are often a punchline, humanities grads deserve some extra special gifts.

General Humanities Grad Gifts

  • Money. Cash. Green. Moo-la. Dolla-dolla bills. Cheddar. Bread. Bag. Bacon. Dough. That reminds me that food will also be helpful to these literally poor souls. (I was a humanities major…I can attest to it).
  • Media. Books, music, art—humanities grads not only love all of these, they’re crucial to keep up on so they stay relevant in their fields. A mix of their favorite classics and content that’s new to them would be perfect.
  • Craft supplies. Humanities grads don’t just consume a lot of content, they make it, too! Whatever their craft is, giving them more tools to keep creating (both for themselves and their jobs) is always a meaningful gesture.

Humanities Grad Gifts by Specialty

  • Art: Prints of their favorite pieces in a quality frame, trip to a museum they’ve been wanting to visit
  • English: Books, more books, different publishing style guides like AP, APA, Chicago, etc.
  • History: Also books, like biographies or autobiographies, or books about specific events or eras
  • Music: Instruments and instrument accessories, records and record players (same combo for other analog music formats), sheet music
  • Theater/Drama: Tickets to their favorite show, improv classes or workshops
  • Religious Studies: Trips to visitors-welcome holy sites, gifts that remind them of their faith
  • Languages: Language-learning software, translation app subscriptions, word games
  • Philosophy: Misquotes from their favorite philosophers, collector-quality books by major philosophers
  • Cultural Studies: Relevant museum and nonprofit memberships

Military

Whether they’re graduating from military college, basic training, or specialized military school, military grads were working hard and they’re about to work even harder. Gifts are definitely in order!

  • All their favorites. Military grads have been without a lot of their comforts and will soon be without them again if they’re getting deployed, so squeeze all the favorite meals, restaurants, movies and trips you can into their time off.
  • A military action figure. It’s always great to remind service members that they have so many people around the world looking up to them, kids included. It can also be a fun callback to their own childhood! We have some plush military itty bittys® if your grad would appreciate something softer.
  • Stationery for writing home. Of course we have digital communication, but due to remote locations and other reasons, service members don’t have the ability to call or text any They might appreciate some good, old-fashioned paper and envelopes they can jot thoughts onto and send. And here are some cards you can send them!

Natural Sciences

Natural Science grads help us understand the “how” of everything around us. So let’s get to thinking about how we can make them feel most celebrated!

General Natural Sciences Grad Gifts

  • A visit to an interactive science museum. Science has been synonymous with school for these grads for a long time—and they might appreciate getting to interact with it without a grade. Lean into the old-school field trip energy for some extra fun nostalgia!
  • Tools and equipment. Lab equipment, field equipment…your grad might need it all! If they have a position set up, check with them about what supplies will likely be provided for them vs. what they’ll need to bring on their own. If they don’t have a position yet, try something hobby-adjacent (like a little perfume-making lab kit or a rock polisher). Notebooks and pencils will also always come in handy.
  • A copy of their favorite documentary: Most of these grads are going to have at least ONE favorite nature doc (whether or not they pair it with drugs is none of your business), so a digital copy, old-school hard copy or even related merchandise would be great!

Natural Sciences Grad Gifts by Specialty

  • Biology: A cool microscope or little stickers to personalize one they already have
  • Chemistry: Fancy periodic table of the elements and decorative (or practical-use) beakers and test tubes
  • Physics: A desk ornament à la Newton’s Cradle
  • Earth Sciences: A vintage globe, maybe paired with this earth-themed card
  • Environmental Science: Earth Day celebration prep kit, these cool pop-up nature cards

Social Sciences

Social Science grads are people-people—they have studied subjects that help us understand each other and take care of each other. They should get taken care of, too!

General Social Sciences Grad Gifts

  • Software. Tools for collecting survey data and visualizing data are helpful for research projects that your grad is passionate about (whether for personal or professional reasons).
  • Social Party Games. There are so many good ones out now that play on the fun ways humans can interact with each other. Bluffing games and hidden role games are a great place to start! Though we can also recommend the simple silliness of Joggles.
  • Books. There are always interesting new social science books coming out. Pick one on a subject closest to your grad’s specific major!

Natural Sciences Grad Gifts by Specialty

  • Sociology: A stress-relief candle if they’re going into social services, true crime book if they’re headed into law enforcement
  • Psychology: Brain-themed treats and tchotchkes, subscription to a psychology-focused medical journal
  • Geography: Displayable maps of a place that means something to them or that they want to visit
  • Economics: Graphing or statistical software, funny graph stickers

  • Anthropology: Notebooks and digital recorders for data, bone displays or artifacts

Postgraduate and Professional Degrees

We didn’t forget about these grads! They just get their own section because of their extra-long and rigorous programs.

Clinical Psychology

Clinical psych grads are going into the specialized field of diagnosing and treating complicated mental health conditions. They’ll help a lot of people, and these gift ideas will help them feel celebrated!

  • Furniture and/or decorations for their office. Clinical psychologists work face-to-face with patients who are often in mental health distress. Ask your grad what furniture they need to be the most helpful. Plants, pillows and candy bowls filled with chocolate are usually safe bets.
  • Software for managing patients. If your grad is going to run their own practice, there’s software available to help keep track of appointments, billing, and all that jazz.
  • Something to make them laugh. Clinical psychologists spend a lot of time wading through heavy topics with people, so it’s good for their own mental health to have some humorous stuff around. Like this Peanuts® Lucy glass!

Dental

Dental school grads typically have spent eight years in school and now have to spend every weekday with their hands in human mouths (notoriously not great places). Though their salaries will make up for it, they still deserve to be celebrated! We even have a specific card for the occasion.

  • Smiley things. Dental grads are all about smiles, and Hallmark has a lot of cute, smiley stuff. We have a Warmies Heatable Scented Smiley Face Plush for aches and pains after work, a very smiley grad card and a smiley gift card holder, too!
  • Dental tools. Especially if your grad is starting their own practice, they’ll need to buy equipment like scalers (the metal hook/scrapey thingy). Even if they’re not starting their own practice, they might still appreciate always having tools on hand. Ask the grad about preferences.
  • Conversation starters. Have you ever tried to break the ice while digging around in someone’s mouth? It ain’t easy. Some good conversation starters will help their chair-side manner feel warm and welcoming at best and amusing at worst.

Law

Law school grads may or may not be about to make bank (thank you, public defenders 👏), but they FOR SURE spent a lot of time and resources to graduate. They worked hard and they have the power to help people, which definitely merits a graduation gift!

  • Courtroom clothes and accessories. Having solid business wear is extremely helpful in making a good impression in the courtroom. Ask your grad what’s on their wish list and be sure to get accurate sizing information.
  • Debate games. There are some social party games out there that are rooted in a law grad’s favorite thing: arguing.
  • Good, portable dishware. Lawyers sometimes have to fuel-up on the go, so they might find it helpful to have some professional-looking and high-quality travel mugs and food containers.

Psst…these would make gift ideas for newly certified paralegals, too!

Medical or Nursing School

A selection of gifts for a recent graduate of a nursing or doctoral program, including a trinket tray shaped like a bandaid that reads

Medical/nursing grads are going to be out there saving lives! The least we can do is get them some good graduation gifts.

  • Orthopedic shoes. These grads are on their feet all the time, and even if they have a pair that’s still in good shape right now, it won’t be long until those get worn down. Be sure to ask about size and brand preferences!
  • Scrubs and tools. Most of the time, medical professionals are expected to buy their own scrubs and their own stethoscopes (and other scopes). They might already have their scopes from school, but your medical grad could probably use some fresh scrubs after completing their education. Choose based on their style, and if that feels too boring then throw a card in the mix so it’s more personal!
  • Unwind items. Healthcare is no walk in the park (even though they advise us to do that a lot). Nursing and medical grads need some items to help them relax when they can. A calming candle, a comforting mug, and a pair of socks is a great combo to start.
  • Medical journal subscription. There’s a LOT of new info coming out every day that folks in medical professions are expected to stay on top of. Help them out with a subscription to a well-respected medical journal or two.

Other medical or nursing school graduation gifts, just for fun:

Pharmacy

Pharmacy school grads had to work hard for six years to get their degrees, and they make all our lives a whole lot better. These gifts would hopefully make their lives a whole lot better in return—at least professionally speaking!

  • A good calculator. Some pharmacists (like hospital pharmacists) use graphing calculators. See if there’s an upgrade you can help your grad get. You could also give them stickers in a card to decorate their current calculator.
  • A notebook and binder. If your grad likes to be able to physically write things down and keep reference information handy, both a notebook and a binder would really help them out. There’s a lot for pharmacists to keep track of.
  • Supportive footwear. Pharmacists have to spend a lot of time standing, so supportive shoes and insoles are incredibly important.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy grads will diagnose and treat patients with limited mobility due to medical conditions and/or injuries. They committed to about seven years of school so they could help others heal, so some great gifts are definitely in order.

  • Compression socks and good shoes. PT grads aren’t just going to be telling their patients how to move, they’ll be showing them how to move and helping them get around all day! Proper footwear is nonnegotiable.
  • Sore muscle relief products. PTs get tired and sore, too! Especially since they move around all day. Epsom salts, ice packs and heating pads are sure to be appreciated. For an extra cute spin on heat aids, check out Warmies!
  • Water bottles. Days full of movement require good hydration! Get your PT grad a fun water bottle or two so they can hydrate in style—especially if they love Peanuts, Disney or Star Wars!

Social Work

Social work grads change so many lives. They help a wide range of people, from children, families, immigrants and survivors of domestic abuse to folks with mental health difficulties and folks struggling with substance abuse. They also often help members of marginalized communities who are underserved, under-protected and often discriminated against. And they don’t get paid very much to do it, so they deserve the best gifts we can give them. 🫶

  • Stress-relievers. Everyone needs to be able to come home and unwind, and social workers are often coming home from very difficult situations. Candles, mugs, chocolate, blankets, Warmies—get them everything!
  • Encouraging reminders. Even if it seems a little cheesy, seeing encouragement in multiple ways throughout the day can make a big difference. Seeing as we’re Hallmark, we have LOTS of encouraging products. This cheeky gift set, these mantra car tissues, and this encouraging card are great places to start.
  • Dark humor. Social workers see firsthand every day what the consequences are for systemic injustice (in all its forms), and that can make it hard to laugh at content that doesn’t acknowledge how messed up things can be. That can make it hard to laugh, period! So sometimes a dumpster fire mug is the best way to validate their feelings, make them smile AND give them coffee.

Veterinary

Vet school grads take care of some of the most important creatures out there—our furry friends! They spent at least eight years in school, and their animal-loving hearts have to be strong when they’re helping pets in pain, so they deserve the best gifts we can give them.

  • Supportive! Footwear! If you’ve been reading this thing all the way through, I’m sure you want to throw tomatoes at me for using this idea again. Sorry not sorry, it’s really important for folks working in healthcare industries to have good shoes!
  • A fun animal excursion. Vets love animals but are often seeing them when they’re hurt or sick. Your grad might really love to interact with some healthy creatures at a cat café or a petting zoo.
  • Anything with their favorite pet on it. It doesn’t even have to be something they can bring or wear to work! They’d probably love this blanket. Cat person: mug, earrings, clips! Dog person: mug and tea towel combo, pug socks, pup puzzle! You get the idea.

Well, this article has to end sometime and that sometime is now! If we missed your grad’s major, there’s a good formula to follow for their gift: Need to have + want to have + fun to have. Let us know how gifting for your grad goes by tagging us on socials and have fun celebrating!

Want more grad celebration ideas? Oh, we’ve got them:
