Millennial nostalgia, but make it Christmas: Keepsake Ornaments you’ll want on your tree

A collage of Keepsake Ornaments that Millennials would love to have on their Christmas tree; all of the ornaments feature aspects of '90s nostalgia, including characters like Mike and Sully from Disney Pixar Monsters Inc.; the orange couch from the TV sitcom Friends; and an ornament that looks exactly like a Lunchables snack box.

The pop culture of the ’80s and ’90s had such a huge impact on millennials’ childhoods. I should know—I’m considered a “zillennial” (between a Gen Z and millennial) and got as many quotes from true millennials as I could. In fact, ’80s and ’90s pop culture is still a big part of how I connect with my family, friends and partner.

So when I saw all these Hallmark Keepsake Ornaments for millennials, visions of nostalgic fandom trees immediately danced in my head. Decorating with these Christmas tree ornaments would be an amazing way to make the holidays feel like revisiting childhood while creating new meaningful memories. Let me show you what I mean!

Saturday Cartoon Nostalgia

A Keepsake Ornament featuring the character Arnold from the Nickelodeon animated TV show,

Nickelodeon Hey Arnold!

This animated sitcom about a fourth grader with a football-shaped head, his friends and their adventures in the fictional urban city of Hillwood, Washington, is a huge touchstone for so many millennials. Our Nickelodeon Hey Arnold! Arnold Shortman Ornament captures both the chill vibes that everyone loved as well as the impressive sculpt of Arnold’s unique noggin.

“There are so many friends I could give this ornament to, but it also makes me think of my dad. We would say “Move it, football head!” to each other when one of us was blocking something in the house. This would be a fun, nostalgic ornament to give to him that I think he’d enjoy—and he’s a hard dad to buy for!” – Rose M., 32

A Lizzie McGuire Keepsake Ornament and a Suga Mama Keepsake Ornament stand near one another on a green surface.

Disney The Proud Family

Following 14-year-old Penny Proud’s journey through tweendom—plus her family’s and friends’ shenanigans—was an absolute joy and welcomed inclusion for many millennials.

Our Disney The Proud Family Louder and Prouder Suga Mama and Puff Ornament honors the iconic Suga Mama herself with Puff tucked in her arms—right where he likes to be! Whether you’re getting it for yourself or someone else, this ornament would pair well with some cute “grandmillennial” gifts.

“Being one of the few Black TV shows for kids growing up, I loved seeing a cartoon that represented me—my hair, my family and culture. Suga Mama is my favorite.” – Shari W., 33

Disney Lizzie McGuire

Being in middle school is both no joke and the ultimate joke, and Lizzie McGuire captured that for me perfectly. Between her worries about being popular, her clumsiness and her habit of being in her head, I felt so seen.

I’m confident other Lizzie fans will also get a kick out of our Disney Lizzie McGuire Animated Alter Ego Ornament. Buy it for your inner middle-school survivor, a friend who loved the show or maybe even a middle-schooler in your life who you want to share the show with.

“This ornament brings up so many childhood memories! I loved watching (the now hilarious) outfits Lizzie would wear, her ornery brother and the sibling dynamics (being an older sibling myself). The show spoke to many topics that I identified with as a young female but was quirky and fun! I’ll be adding this ornament to my Christmas tree this year.” – Briana W., 34

Movies and Shows We Grew Up Quoting

A collage of Keepsake Ornaments, including Jessie from Disney Pixar

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

As an anxious teen, I adored Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Ferris was a character who helped me channel the courage to take things a little less seriously. Other fans will love Hallmark’s Ferris Bueller’s Day Off Ferris Bueller Ornament With Sound, which includes clips of beloved and iconic quotes and Ferris’s truly flawless ’80s ’fit. Whether you’re buying it for yourself or for someone else, I highly recommend a thrifted vest and a day playing hooky to go with it.

Gremlins

Though it scared me the first few times I saw it, my love for Gremlins has multiplied over time. The holiday horror comedy is still in my family’s Christmas movie rotation, and we quote “BRIGHT LIGHT! BRIGHT LIGHT!” constantly.

Hallmark’s Gremlins™ Gizmo™ Ornament features the cutest of them all, Gizmo himself, popping out of a present box. If you’re gifting him to someone else, adding a little care list into your card would be a cute touch!

“Gizmo is so cute! Makes me nostalgic for campy ’80s horror. Parents had no rules in the ’80s. I swear we could watch anything.” – Jordy B., 39

Star Wars

For my family, Star Wars™ and Christmas have always been intertwined. My brother always got Star Wars™ LEGO® sets from Santa, and with my mom being a devoted fan, we always marathon-watched the original trilogy on Christmas Day.

For fellow fans of the space opera, Hallmark has A TON of awesome ornaments. From characters like Boba Fett™, R2-D2™, Darth Vader™, Luke Skywalker™, Grogu™ and Maul™, to ships like the mini Millenium Falcon™, a mini X-Wing Starfighter™ and a full-size B-Wing Fighter™, our Keepsake artists have done it all! You can even add a mini Christmas tree and a coordinating mini tree topper and tree skirt. Whether you’re collecting for yourself or adding to a loved one’s collection, you’re going to have a good feeling about this.

Shrek

This cranky green ogre not only influenced millennials to forever yell “Donkey!” in a Scottish accent, he also made us laugh and gave us one of the best movie soundtracks of all time.

Hallmark’s Shrek “Not My Buttons!” Ornament honors one of the most famous quotes from the first movie and features the infamous Gingy and Lord Farquaad interrogation scene in exquisite detail.

“I would buy this simply because of the iconic quote!! This would make me smile every time I saw it on my tree. Am I going to have to start a new tradition of watching Shrek while putting up ornaments?” – Rose M., 32

Gilmore Girls

Lorelai, Rory and Emily Gilmore have become a go-to presence for many millennials who consider Gilmore Girls a comfort show. The intergenerational dramedy is especially popular to rewatch in fall, as all the beautiful New England foliage feels right on season.

Hallmark’s Gilmore Girls Ornament With Light and Sound features an old-school TV featuring two different screencaps of Lorelai and Luke and audio clips that can be played by pressing the button. Plus, of course, a mug of Luke’s famous coffee!

“In 2001–2003 this show was always in the background when I got home from school. The theme song carries a lot of nostalgia for me. When I finally [fully] watched it as an adult, the show quickly became an open time capsule for me, capturing the clothes, phrases and more from the early 2000s that still bring me comfort. This show reminds me of how slowly time seemed to move and what positive boredom felt like before adulting took over.” – Shari W., 33

Friends

Nothing raised my expectations for young adulthood quite like this 1994-2004 sitcom about six friends living in NYC. My family and I watched the whole series in the summer of 2012, inspiring my future high school haircuts.

Hallmark’s Friends Pivot! Ornament With Sound pays homage to one of the most hilarious and annoying bits that my family and I still reference every time we have to move furniture. Pair it with the Friends Chillin’ With Friends Ornament With Light and Sound and the Friends Central Perk Couch Ornament With Sound.

Toys and Playtime Icons

Whether we played with the toys, watched the shows and movies associated with the toys or both, millennials were shaped by some rightfully beloved characters and brands.

Hasbro® Tonka®

Even if you didn’t play with Tonka Trucks themselves, you’ve most likely heard of them! Tonka Toys has been around since 1947 and is famous for their detailed, durable and interactive designs.

Our new Tonka® Keepsake Ornaments this year are the Hasbro® Tonka® State Hi-Way Dept Dump Truck Metal Ornament and the Hasbro® Tonka® Mighty Dump Truck Ornament. You can indulge your inner kid or introduce a kid in your life to the fun of Tonka Trucks!

“They remind me of time spent with my cousins…we’d usually play in the sandbox, building all sorts of tunnels and sandcastles, using the trucks as if it were a real construction site. It’s funny that I work in construction now…it’s no different than being a kid again!” – M. I-H., 29

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles™

The title’s catchy syllable stress pattern is a work of art in itself, and the turtles themselves live up to the hype.

Hallmark’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles The Last Ronin Ornament is a great gift for TMNT fans who are still following the comics! If you’re looking for more old-school turtle nostalgia, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Comic Book Hallmark Ornament has all four of the turtle brothers.

“Crime-fighting reptiles who are martial arts masters, live in a sewer and love pizza? What’s not to love? Those heroes in a half-shell were all over the place for me—TV shows, video games, movies and all kinds of pretend play with my friends. For the record, I was always Donatello, partly because he had an awesome bo staff, but mostly because he was the lovable nerd of the group (a role I played in my friend group as well). Cowabunga!” – Andrew B., 37

Three Barbie Keepsake Ornaments are collaged together on a pink background, including a Día de Muertos Barbie; a Barbie wearing a bright green helmet and riding a blue motorized scooter; and an African American Barbie in a coordinating bright blue outfit.

Barbie™ Ornaments

I have endless nostalgia for this does-it-all fashionista. My friends and I would spend hours crafting stories with our dolls after Barbie in the Nutcracker came out in 2001. For the 25th anniversary of the movie, Hallmark Keepsake artists crafted a Barbie™ in the Nutcracker™ 25th Anniversary Porcelain and Fabric Ornament! That’s right, she’s made of porcelain.

Other notable and fabulous Barbie™ ornaments we’re releasing this year include the Barbie™ Día De Muertos Ornament, the Barbie™ Beauty Secrets Christie™ Ornament and the mini Barbie™ Sophisticated Lady Carrying Case Ornament.

Hasbro® Transformers™

My main nostalgia for Transformers™ comes from my mom’s love of the 2007 live-action movie. But the alien-robots have been transforming in toys, television, comics and movies since 1984.

New Transformers™ Keepsake Ornaments this year include the Hasbro® Transformers™ Optimus Prime’s Power Ornament and the Hasbro® My Little Pony® Transformers™ My Little Prime Ornament.

A collection of Keepsake Ornaments featuring characters from the Super Mario Bros. franchise, including Fireball Mario, Yoshi, and a Koopa Trooper.

Mario

This mustached gaming hero was a HUGE part of my childhood. Whenever I was sick and home from school, my dad made chicken pasta salad and I played Super Mario™ Sunshine on our Nintendo GameCube. My brother regularly beat me in Super Smash Bros. and we spent many hours playing Mario Kart: Double Dash!!

Hallmark has a Nintendo Mario Kart™ Lakitu Ornament and a Nintendo Powered Up With Mario Fire Mario Ornament. Start a collection of your own, or send one to a friend or sibling you used to play with (or still do!).

“I was actually introduced to Mario by my grandparents! They beat the game before us kids did and handed down their NES to my brother and I when they upgraded to a Super Nintendo console. I can still picture my grandma playing it in her easy chair, leaning side-to-side when doing big jumps across pits and making daring moves during boss fights.” – Shanna S., 44

Elmo

Sesame Street® is super nostalgic for millennials, but Elmo in particular holds a special place in their hearts and memes! From the Tickle Me Elmo commercials to his viral tweets, that little red monster brings up a lot of memories.

Hallmark’s Sesame Street® 30th Anniversary Tickle Me Elmo Ornament With Motion-Activated Sound is an excellent homage for Elmo fans of all ages to enjoy!

Snack and Book Memories

A collection of 90s-nostalgia Keepsake Ornaments collaged on a neutral background, including an ornament that looks just like a Lunchables snack box; an ornament that looks like a jar of Miracle Whip; and an ornament that looks like Fred and Barney from the Flintstones, popping out of a box of Post Cocoa Pebbles.

We’ve talked about a lot of shows and movies, but snacks and books are also heavy hitters when it comes to millennial nostalgia.

LUNCHABLES™

I used to eat the nacho LUNCHABLES™, which got me a LOT of unwanted attention at daycare. To resurrect some of that school-lunch nostalgia, Hallmark Keepsake Ornaments has the Kraft Foods LUNCHABLES™ Stack and Snack Ornament. Remember, only consume with your eyes!

“[It was] a coveted snack. Everyone wanted a tiny little cracker sandwich with undefinable meat.” – Jordy B., 39

Cocoa PEBBLES™

This chocolate cereal was part of many a millennial’s morning ritual. Now, with Hallmark’s The Flintstones™ Cocoa PEBBLES™ Ornament, it can be part of their Christmas traditions, too! To go the extra mile (for yourself or someone else), pair the ornament with a box of the actual cereal and a festive bowl.

“I ate my way through many boxes of sugary cereal in my childhood, but whenever Cocoa PEBBLES™ was present in our house, it never lasted long. It was dessert in a bowl, with the bonus of chocolate milk after you finished, all while feeling like you were part of one of your favorite prehistoric cartoons. Delicious, crispy, crunchy, chocolatey memories.” – Andrew B., 37

Miracle Whip™

Whether you love it, hate it, love to hate it OR hate to love it, this mayonnaise substitute was a big part of the ’80s and ’90s!

Hallmark’s Kraft Foods Miracle Whip™ Ornament is the perfect gift for Miracle Whip™ fans. It can also make a great addition to a food-themed Christmas tree of your own!

“I never realized growing up that Miracle Whip™ wasn’t actual mayonnaise. It may not be a staple in my refrigerator as an adult, but it definitely brings back memories—of bologna sandwiches, of field trip sack lunches and of that tangy zip that you just can’t get anywhere else.” – Andrew B., 37

Goosebumps

These children’s horror novels written by R.L. Stine between 1992 and 1997 were, and still are, beloved by millennials.

Hallmark’s Goosebumps™ The Haunted Mask Ornament is a perfect gift for fans of horror, both young and old, and an excellent addition to a Halloween tree!

“Goosebumps™ will always have a piece of my heart for instilling an early love of horror and paying my way to countless free Pizza Hut® Book It!® pizzas. You look very brave and cool carrying a worn paperback with a terrifying monster on it, FYI. Totally cancels out the glasses and bad haircut. Goosebumps is currently raising the hair on the next generation of horror lovers at our house. After all, you have to educate your kids in the classics.” – Valerie S., 34

All the Disney Characters

A collection of Disney Keepsake Ornaments featuring beloved characters like Ariel from The Little Mermaid; Belle from Beauty and the Beast; Rex from Toy Story; Mike and Sully from Monsters Inc.; and Roz, also from Monsters Inc.

Disney/Pixar Monsters Inc.

This 2001 hit scared little me but, once I was old enough, I could appreciate the comedic genius behind the idea of a scare factory and the heartwarming bond between Boo and her monsters.

This year, Hallmark Keepsake Ornaments has a Disney/Pixar Monsters, Inc. Mike and Sulley Ornament to honor Boo’s favorites, as well as a Disney/Pixar Monsters, Inc. Roz Ornament With Sound for everyone’s favorite office administrator.

Disney/Pixar Toy Story

With 1995 being Toy Story’s release year and the year my brother was born, his love for Buzz Lightyear was meant to be. This film and its sequels about toys-come-to-life touch on so many meaningful themes about growing up that it has stayed relevant for the kids it was first released for.

Hallmark Keepsake Ornaments is introducing a Disney/Pixar Toy Story Wrapped-Up Rex Ornament to celebrate the popular dinosaur, a Disney/Pixar Toy Story 5 Jessie and Smarty Pants Ornament for our cowgirl fans and a Disney/Pixar Toy Story Alien Jack-o’-Lantern Ornament With Light for Halloween- and alien-lovers alike!

“I was immediately attached to Woody and Buzz, and the movie’s themes of friendship, sacrifice and preserving the kid in all of us still resonate with me to this day. Now my own kids are Toy Story fans, and I cannot fully confirm or deny whether their own toys are secretly having adventures of their own every time we leave them alone.” – Andrew B., 37

A Keepsake Ornament featuring Disney Princesses Cinderella, Jasmine and Ariel, riding on a carousel.

Disney Beauty and the Beast

As an avid book-lover, Belle was my mom’s favorite princess. You can celebrate the 35th anniversary of this beautiful story about love, friendship and character growth with a Disney Beauty and the Beast 35th Anniversary Belle With the Enchanted Mirror Ornament and/or a Disney Beauty and the Beast 35th Anniversary Mrs. Potts and Chip Ornament. Thoughtful gift pairings might include roses, books and tea!

Disney The Little Mermaid

Though this tale about a mermaid who desperately wants to be human came out in 1989, it was a comfort movie for me in the 2010s. When I had trouble sleeping, the sound of “Under the Sea” through my VHS TV was a lullaby.

Hallmark Keepsake Ornaments is releasing a Disney The Little Mermaid Where the People Are Ornament and a Disney The Little Mermaid Ursula Ornament! There’s also a Disney Princess Dreams Go Round Musical Ornament With Light and Motion featuring Ariel, Princess Jasmine and Cinderella if the love extends to more Disney Princesses!

“My friends and I would play mermaids at the swimming pool in the summer, and I always got to be Ariel because I was the only one with red hair. There were no arguments. It remains the only time in my life I’ve had a trump card like that. And of course, I knew ALL the songs. So, the ‘Where the People Are’ ornament is prime nostalgia for me.” – Shanna S., 44

Classic Christmas Movies

Many Christmas movies from the ’80s and ’90s have become a big part of millennials’ traditions—from influencing Christmas decorations and gifts to inspiring whole watch parties.

Disney Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas

I was not cool enough (or alive enough) to appreciate The Nightmare Before Christmas in its release year of 1993, but it became a favorite in my mid- to late-20s. Who doesn’t have a catastrophic identity crisis that jeopardizes Christmas at some point in their lives?!

For lovers of this Tim Burton classic, Hallmark Keepsake Ornaments is releasing the following this year:

“I feel like I can’t fully explain what this movie means to me. I watched it so much as a kid, I wore out the VHS tape and my mom had to buy me a new one. These days, it’s not Halloween unless I’ve watched it. It’s not Christmas unless I’ve watched it again (this time while baking). I have a Keepsake Ornament from the 2000s of Jack Skellington dangling from a bit of garland, given to me by my childhood best friend. It’s just always been a huge part of my life.” – Shanna S., 44

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

This is a Christmas classic for my family. We almost know the script by heart at this point, with the exception of Clark’s legendary rant.

Hallmark is releasing another sculpt of Clark in the National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation™ Clark Griswold Ornament With Sound, the National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation™ Nine Lives Spent Ornament With Light and Sound (RIP to Aunt Bethany’s cat) and, for your table, the National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation™ Griswold Family Christmas Tabletop Decoration With Light and Sound.

A collection of Peanuts Keepsake Ornaments, featuring beloved characters like Snoopy, Woodstock, Charlie Brown, Linus, Lucy and Franklin.

Peanuts® A Charlie Brown Christmas

Of course we have to mention good ol’ Charlie Brown! My family and I love watching the gang, and whenever we end up with a tree on the scrappier side, we call it a Charlie Brown tree. Hallmark Keepsake Ornaments is releasing FOURTEEN new Peanuts® Keepsake Ornaments, plus a mini Christmas tree topper and coordinating tree skirt!

There’s a little TV that literally plays a video clip of the gang ice skating to “Christmas Time is Here.” Here’s a special demo video, and here’s a list of all the Peanuts® Keepsake Ornament products coming out this year:

Our favorite things can say a lot about us and offer a peek into our lives that otherwise might not have been visible. Keepsake Ornaments help millennials pass on not just their favorite content and memories but also what they value about the pop culture that shaped them. That can bring people closer for generations to come. 💗
