DIY Koala Valentine Box: Make yours with our free template
This DIY Koala Valentine Box is adorable and easy to make—a rare combination you’ll appreciate when your kiddo comes to you February 13 with a request to help them make the perfect Valentine’s Day mailbox for all those heart-bedecked messages. Our version simplifies the process even further by using a Hallmark gift box and bows. But you can personalize your own Koala with a few substitutes you probably already have in your craft stash.

Use scissors or a craft knife to cut out the parts of the face, trace them onto the card stock or construction paper as indicated in the directions on the download, and cut them out.
Prep the box
If you use the pink Hallmark gift box, the top flap will be the face and the front side will be the top.
- Cut the ribbons off as close to the box as possible.
- Use the craft knife to cut a mail slot (about 3½” by 1¼”) on the front of the box.
- Stick a piece of tape through the mail slot to hold the flap closed.
If you’re using a shoebox or shipping box:
- Paint it or cover it with solid-color paper.
- When it’s dry, use the craft knife to cut a mail slot about 3½” by 1¼” in the top.
Make the face
- Glue the pom-pom ears to the sides of the box, placing them close to the front and right at the top.
- Glue the black inner eyes to the pink eye circles. Use the white paint marker or crayon to make a little white dot on the upper right of the inner eye.
- Glue the pink heart near the bottom of the black nose.
- Following the photo, glue the nose, then the mouth, then the eyes to the box. (Play around with placement before you stick them down to make sure you’re happy with the expression.)
