Meals that warm the soul
Nothing beats a homemade meal. No matter what cuisine your father prefers, here are some ideas to make the meal memorable.
- Make Dad a homemade breakfast, complete with personalized pancake toppers and a heartfelt card to start the day.
- Have an indoor picnic with fun foods like sliders and cake pops, a playlist of your dad’s favorite tunes and, of course, a cozy picnic blanket that can accommodate the whole family.
- Does he have a favorite dish? Maybe something from his childhood that his mom or dad used to make or an old family recipe? See if you can find it or re-create it.
- If your dad is a pizza lover, have an Italian-themed dinner with these grilled pizza recipes that he’s sure to love.
- Speaking of different cultures, if your family has a strong cultural identity, think about cooking an entire meal based on favorites from your culture.
- Want to propose a toast? Try these easy, refreshing beer cocktails (cheers to Dad!).

Get out or get active
If you want to go beyond the usual Father’s Day dinner, an activity could be a fun alternative.
- You could enjoy the great outdoors by taking a bike ride, heading out on the lake or exploring a vintage antique shop.
- Take it back to his childhood. Was Dad into video games? Find his favorite old gaming console and offer a friendly challenge. Get some crazy-fast RC cars, find an empty lot and see who can do the highest jumps or the most doughnuts.
- If your father is more of a “great indoors” guy, try assembling a hard-to-do-alone puzzle or curating a playlist that blends your music tastes. Note: These ideas work great for grandfathers and father figures, too!
- Attend a mid-afternoon matinee. Have him pick the movie and spring for an extra-large popcorn or any snacks he loves.
- Do you and your father share a niche nerd fandom? Have a throwback movie night featuring your favorite franchise, a hours-long gaming sesh or another bonding activity that lets you both geek out together.
If religion is central to you and your father’s relationship, you may consider hosting a celebration that includes your church’s congregation in some way. Top it off with a card that tells him how much of a blessing he is.
- Introduce him to something new. Try out woodworking and take a pen-turning class. Take a cooking or mixology class together. Find a place that gives helicopter or plane flying lessons.
- Father’s Day is even better when you’re lucky enough to have two dads. If you want to celebrate both dads so that they feel special as individuals and as the loving unit they are together, check out these Father’s Day ideas from LGBTQ+ families.
Gifts to show your love
No matter what kind of dad you have, there’s a gift that fits him. Think about his passions, the moments that make him smile and the things he could use more of.
- If your dad is tech-savvy, consider a new gadget. If he’s into coffee, maybe a fun mug. Then plus it up with these mug gifting ideas. If he’s creative, try gifting craft supplies and planning a night of DIY. For more ideas based on Dad’s interests, check out our big list of gift ideas.
- Make Dad a DIY gift basket filled with his favorite items. For an added touch, include a custom photo card complete with a personalized message. Not the best with words? Here’s some ideas to get your message started.
- To celebrate your dad’s cherished memories, make him a DIY memory box filled with old photos, mementos and cards you’ve sent him over the years.
- For new dads, consider acts of service like arranging a cleaning service or offering to take a chore off their hands.
- If you’re crafty and want to make something of your own, try building this key hanger or a set of these pat-on-the-back snack packs.
- For a dad who is completely unserious, bring a little humor into his day with “football is my favorite F words” socks, a personalized trinket dish where you can add a joke of your own, or one of these other funny gift ideas.
