A prayer for new baby
In loving our babies deeply, they’re actually teaching us. Our babies, and the love we have for them, give us a glimpse of the love God has for us. All consuming. Never-ending. Unconditional. Lavished upon. And we are celebrated. Sung over. Rejoiced in. Adored. Let’s say a prayer for these precious little ones!

A new baby. All cheeks and silky skin, tiny fingers and itty-bitty toes, loud cries and wide eyes. A perfect little nose and the most beautiful ears you’ve ever seen. They may be bald, or have a head of curls. But either way, they have our hearts from their first breath.
New babies are perhaps the sweetest, scariest, most heart-consuming people in our lives. And as the parent(s) to the new baby, we are happily consumed, still a little scared, but completely in love and awe.
Our great God, who created majestic mountains, vast plains, endless oceans and sweeping deserts, He knit that precious baby together in secret. He planned the placement of each birthmark, took careful count of each hair that would be on their head, and crafted just the right shade of blue or brown for those sweet and sleepy eyes.
God created, and it was good.
I chose you before I formed you in the womb; I set you apart before you were born. I appointed you a prophet to the nations. Jeremiah 1:5 CSB
These little babies, created to perfection, arrive with nothing and needing everything. I don’t mean everything on the baby registry (well, stock up on diapers. They will need loads of those). No, it’s the overwhelming love you have for your baby that is what they need the most.
Lavish them with your love. Lay it on thick. Kiss their sweet cheeks, tickle their tiny toes, hold them close and whisper blessing over their lives. Watch them sleep and smile as they wake (no matter what time it is!) Nuzzle their nose, laugh at their wiggles, speak their baby language and have wordless conversations.
Love them deeply.

In loving your precious gift, you are given even more–the chance to love and be loved, to taste and see how the Lord loves and to offer such love in return.
Congratulations on your new baby, and on this joyful and blessed (and sleepy) time!
Below is a prayer for new babies and their parents. Take a moment to pray, lifting up precious little ones and their parents to the Lord:
Lord,
Thank you for this precious blessing! There seems to be no greater physical gift than this sweet bundle of joy, sent straight from You. Their perfect little fingers and toes, the way they smell like heaven, the love that bubbles up–unmatched in its depth. It’s a wonderful kind of overwhelmed.
Please bless this baby, Lord. Place a shield of protection around their little body and guard them as they grow. Keep them safe and healthy, Lord. Help this dear one to know they are deeply and wholly and forever loved–first by You, and then by so many of us. Bless this baby, Lord, and bless their parents. Help them adjust to their new normal as they welcome a whole new person into their lives, hearts and home. Give them even one whole night of sleep, and give them strength and energy when the nights are short. Blanket their home in peace, grace, and love.
Thank you Lord, for this new life. We praise and thank You for Your good and perfect creation. Amen.
