How to host a puzzle exchange party: tips, themes and swap ideas
Three wonderful words have taken 2026 by storm: puzzle exchange party! A puzzle exchange party is exactly what it sounds like—a group of people who love puzzles meet up and exchange them.
It’s a fun, casual party idea that works for puzzle fans of any age, can be budget-friendly and offers a cozy way to connect with new people and existing loved ones. Local libraries have been in on the puzzling fun for decades and puzzle swap groups have been growing in popularity over the last few years, both on and off social media.

Why are puzzle exchange parties so popular right now?
The renewed love for puzzles is part of a greater analog activity resurgence, which includes love for film cameras, typewriters, vinyl records and more. In our tech-saturated world, more and more folks are looking for ways to connect and relax without screens.
Puzzle exchange parties are also inherently budget-friendly in our high-cost-of-living reality because they don’t require anyone to buy something new; they encourage people to share puzzles they already have on hand. This is a major plus for puzzle lovers who value sustainability but don’t necessarily want to do the same puzzle over and over again.
So how can you host a puzzle exchange party?
The beautiful thing is, there is no “right” way to have a puzzle exchange party! And there are so many creative spins you can add to make your puzzle swap the best it can be for you and the puzzlers in your circle.
That said, there are a few key considerations for every kind of puzzle exchange party:
- Set a number of puzzles for each person to bring. There’s nothing wrong with keeping it simple and choosing the one person/one puzzle ratio, but it might be fun to bring more if your puzzle exchange party has a smaller group of attendees and/or if there will be a donation run for the leftover puzzles.
- Be clear about puzzle condition and quality expectations. Will folks feel their trade is unfair if they get a puzzle that’s missing a piece or has a box that’s a little rough around the edges? Do they care about trading puzzles of the same piece count (500, 750, 1000)? Establish some ground rules with your group of puzzlers and make those rules very clear on an invite they can refer back to.
- Set time expectations. A puzzle exchange can quickly turn into a puzzle exchange sleepover if you end up doing a puzzle as part of the party. Whether that sounds like a dream or a nightmare for you—and it is totally okay to feel either way—make sure you let your guests know your capabilities and preferences.
- Pick a simple swap system. Confusion isn’t fun for anyone, so make sure your swap system is clear to all the puzzle exchange party participants!
What are some simple puzzle swap systems?
- Round-robin. If you have an even number of people, you can stick to a single round of swapping and have everyone pair up with a partner to make their switch. If you want more of a round-robin tournament, then every person can trade with one another at least once.
- White-elephant style. Make a circle and put the puzzle pile in the middle. Then, going clockwise (or counter—whatever you want), take turns picking a puzzle. You can decide who gets to go first by pulling names or choose based on whatever criteria sounds fun. Who got to the party first, who brought the tastiest snack, who was the last person to do a puzzle, etc. Stealing rules are up to you!
- Ticket system. Fill a container with numbered slips of paper that match how many people are at the puzzle exchange party. Whatever number each person draws is the order in which they get to pick a puzzle. This is a nice option if you want to allow for more casual mingling throughout the picking process since you don’t have to sit in a circle and watch each other.
How can you set the mood at your puzzle exchange party?
No matter what space you’re in, there are ways to make it feel the perfect amount of cozy for a puzzle exchange party.
- Soft lighting. So long as you’re not actually doing a puzzle, say no to overhead lights! Lamps, string lights and candles are some classic party lighting go-tos. I also love using my TV to enhance ambience by streaming a crackling fireplace, aquarium footage or generally cozy scenes. 🕯️
- Snacks. A good party will always have snacks! Include little doggy bags for your guests to take home any leftovers with their puzzle. If you’re doing a puzzle that night as part of the fun, it might be best to skip finger food and snacks that are famous for residues and stains. 🍿
- Music. Music affects mood! It can put people at ease to have some playing in the background and also act as a conversation starter if you’re with new folks. Just be mindful of volume and consider instrument-only music for people who get distracted or overstimulated if they’re talking and hearing lyrics at the same time. 📻
- Seating. If you’re going to do a puzzle at this puzzle exchange party, you’ll need a big, cleared surface and places for every guest to sit. The most ergonomically considerate thing to do is a classic table and chairs, unless your couch and coffee table set-up is immaculate. If you’re just exchanging puzzles, still make sure there’s enough space for everyone to get comfortable! I know I feel better at a party when I feel like I have a spot to land. 🛋️
What are some creative puzzle party ideas?
If you’re feeling like adding a bit of a twist to your puzzle exchange party, we have so many ideas for how you can do it!
- Add a theme. A theme is a great way to spice up any gathering, and it can be especially helpful for a puzzle exchange party since it narrows down which puzzle(s) to bring. For example, as a big fan of fall, an autumnal puzzle exchange party sounds like a dream to me. Pumpkin spice drinks, fall snacks, a gorgeous gourd puzzle or autumn scenery puzzle in the mix and a candle that smells like apple pie—what a perfect way to have fun and stock up on puzzles before winter!
- Add a gift. Everyone likes to feel like they’ve won a prize! Have an extra puzzle, treat or tiny gift on hand that party guests can draw numbers for or win. Speaking of winning…
- Add some competition. Speed puzzling is a thing! You can compete individually (which would require multiples of the same puzzle) or work together to put together one puzzle as fast as possible. If you still want a winner in the collaborative scenario, whoever places the last piece wins!
- Add some drinks. You don’t have to do an elaborate, on-theme drink—some of your favorite wine and/or coffee will do perfectly! Especially if you’re keeping your puzzle exchange party on the mellow, low-maintenance side, guests will appreciate some classic bevvies.
- Add some entertainment. With all the awesome licensed puzzles out there, a puzzle exchange party can also be a perfect fandom gathering! You can have a Gilmore Girls puzzle exchange party, a Snoopy one, a Bridgerton one, a Star Wars one, a Golden Girls one, a Disney one—pretty much anything that has puzzles! Add a marathon group puzzle session to the party agenda and set a pajamas-only dress code so people are encouraged to get comfy.
How can you make a puzzle exchange party extra meaningful?
- Encourage notes in puzzle boxes. They could offer kind wishes to the next puzzler, explain why they liked this puzzle or have a little “about me” card to help folks get to know each other.
- In the white-elephant scenario, encourage everyone to share how/why they bought/brought the puzzle they’re exchanging at the end.
- On the invite, encourage folks to bring puzzles that comforted them during tough times, puzzles that they did with loved ones or puzzles that depict something they’re passionate about.
We hope these ideas help you throw the puzzle exchange party of your dreams! Have fun making and strengthening connections through the wonderful world of jigsaw puzzles. And if you try any of these tips, let us know how it goes! 💜
